Auxiliary Constable Volunteers are responsible for accompanying and assisting regular members on patrol and with events throughout the community. Additional duties may include, but are not limited to, collaborating with the Community Mobilization Unit on crime prevention initiatives, assisting officers in marine, bike, and ATV and snow machine patrols.

Due to the amount of time required in the selection and training process, we ask all members to commit to a minimum of three events per month, including a monthly meeting.

Auxiliary Opportunities

  • Initiate police-community interaction
  • Provide police visibility at local community events (ie. Parades, fairs, etc.)
  • Perform crowd management and ensure public safety at large community events such as Santa Clause Parade, Sudbury Rocks Marathon, etc.
  • In conjunction with the Community Mobilization unit, assist with crime prevention and community mobilization activities
  • Perform Traffic Safety initiatives (ie. Observations for caution letters, child safety seats etc.)
  • Participate in the Notification of Community Crime (NOCC) program.
  • Assist the Greater Sudbury Police Service at information booths for public events
  • Assist in recruiting candidates for the GSPS Auxiliary Program
  • Provide a visible presence in parks, cycling paths, ravines, walkways and other public spaces
  • Participate in ride-alongs with Police Officers
  • Actively and effectively participate in meetings, including attending monthly meetings

Minimum Requirements

  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada
  • Minimum 18 years of age (this is the Provincial minimum)
  • Good moral character with no criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted
  • Physically and mentally able to perform the duties of an Auxiliary Constable- must be able to pass the Greater Sudbury Police Service Fitness Test , as well as a medical and psychological assessment
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (O.S.S.D) or its equivalent (i.e. grade 12 from any province of Canada).  Applicants educated outside Canada should refer to the Government of Canada - Education Assessment Resources.
  • Valid driver's license with full driving privileges
  • Current Certificate in CPR (Level "C") and First Aid
  • Bilingualism considered an asset
  • Commitment to Health and Wellness
  • Possession of Boater Safety Card considered an asset

Selection Process

Stage One

  • Complete an application package containing: Auxiliary Constable Application, Cover Letter and Resume

Stage Two

  • Applicant Screening

Stage Three

  • Selected candidates may be contacted to complete a written Auxiliary Local Focus Interview and Pre-Background Questionnaire
  • Selected candidates may be contacted to complete Physical Fitness Testing (Greater Sudbury Police Service-Fitness Assessment)

Stage Four

  • Successful candidates invited for a Competency Interview

Stage Five

  • Psychological Testing and Assessment
  • Background Investigation
  • Vision/Hearing Test
  • Medical Assessment

Stage Six

  • Greater Sudbury Police Service Auxiliary Training Program
