On May 3, 2024, members of the Break, Enter and Robbery (BEAR) Unit observed a motor vehicle with unauthorized license plates being driven on MR35 in Chelmsford. Detectives from the BEAR Unit requested the assistance of Patrol Operations to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle. Upon seeing the marked police cruiser, the driver began driving at a high rate of speed Elm Street. Due to the driver’s aggressive driving behaviour, the officer in the marked cruiser did not pursue the vehicle in the interest of public safety.

The driver of the vehicle continued to drive erratically losing control of the vehicle and striking a parked car at a residence on Ethelbert Street. The driver attempted to flee on foot however after a brief foot pursuit, officers were able to take the driver into custody.

Upon searching the driver and clearing the vehicle, officers located a large quantity of illicit drugs including over 230 grams of Cocaine with a street value of $23,280, over 22 grams of Crystal Meth with a street value of $2,230 and over $800 in cash. Officers also located stolen property and a damaged safe that has not yet been linked to any current investigations.

As a result of the incident, 28-year-old, Jacques Plante has been charged with the following offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA), the Criminal Code of Canada and the Highway Traffic Act (HTA);

  • Possession of a Controlled Substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 x2
  • Failure to Comply with Release Order
  • Breach of Conditional Sentence Order
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Failure to Stop after Accident
  • Driving while Under Suspension
  • Use Plate Not Authorized for Vehicle
  • Fail to Display Two Plates

Jacques Plante was held in police custody overnight and attended Weekend and Statutory Holiday (WASH) Court on May 4, 2024, to answer to the charges.
