We advise community members to be vigilant when looking for and putting down money on rental apartments.
We continue to receive reports of individuals being scammed on sites such as Facebook Marketplace and Rentals.ca, where scammers are posting units that they do not actually own.
The scammer will talk the victim into putting a monetary deposit on the rental unit before physically seeing it in person. When the victim attends the apartment afterward, they discover it was never actually available.
The “landlord” may attempt to pressure you into providing a deposit to prove that you’re serious about buying. Always be wary of high-pressure sales tactics. Avoid paying before you actually see the rental unit.
Do your research of the rental company, property manager, or contact you're dealing with. Never rent sight-unseen and meet the landlord in person before sending any money.
You can report scams to us via our online reporting system.
