As we continue to celebrate Crime Prevention Week by recognizing our valuable and dedicated personnel, both Sworn and Civilian, we’d like to introduce you to Constable Meghan O’Malley working out of our Police Community Response Centre (PCRC):
Q: How long have you been working with the GSPS? And when did you commence the current position, you have now?
A: I have been employed by the GSPS for 26 and a half years. I’ve had a number of positions within the organization and have been working in the PCRC for approximately six years.
Q: What is the mandate/function of your Unit?
A: The main function of our unit is to respond to calls for service that are not of an urgent nature. These incidents are taken over the telephone and through our online reporting system. These incidents include Break & Enters to a detached garage, Frauds, Thefts Under $5,000, Thefts from Vehicles, Found Property, and Mischiefs, among others. Another core function of the PCRC is Crime Prevention. Our unit assists in providing tips to the public on how to keep themselves and their property safe.
Q: Please describe a typical day in your role.
A: In policing, there is really no typical day. Although our response at the PCRC is one geared to non-urgent calls for service, we respond according to the incidents we receive on any given day. We do see patterns in calls relating to thefts from certain areas, graffiti with repeated tags or break and enters with similar suspects. In connecting these incidents, we are able to take appropriate action in relaying the information to the units responsible for investigation or by linking these incidents for further investigation or charges. The PCRC is not only responsible for responding to all calls for service via the telephone and online, we also manage vehicles that have been towed and have dedicated officers assigned to the Collision Reporting Centre and to the Firearms Unit.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I enjoy speaking to members of the public. I get a sense of satisfaction in helping them resolve an issue and in providing them information relating to their situation. I also like that, at the PCRC, we often act as liaisons to other units within the Service, as well as to community groups.
