On November 16, 2024, the Greater Sudbury Police Service in collaboration with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Safe Ride Home Sudbury, and Public Health Sudbury & Districts launched the Festive Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) Campaign. The 2024-2025 Festive RIDE Campaign was in memory of Caitlin Jelley, Jazmine Houle and Steven Philippe, who were killed by an impaired driver on June 21, 2009. Their memories are a painful reminder of the devastating consequences that impaired driving can inflict on families, friends, and entire communities. We owe it to them—and to every member of our community—to do everything in our power to stop impaired driving.

Between November 16 and December 31, 2024, our officers in partnership with officers from the OPP conducted 13 Festive RIDE Checks at various locations throughout Greater Sudbury, checking 3,243 vehicles. The Festive RIDE Checks resulted in officers administering 406 Mandatory Alcohol Screenings, 140 Approved Screening Device tests, 13 Intoxilyzer Tests, five Standard Field Sobriety Tests and three Drug Recognition Evaluations. Officers charged eight drivers with Impaired Driving and issued eight 90-day Driver’s Licence suspension, as well as, 24 three-day Driver’s Licence suspensions and four Novice/Young Driver’s Licence suspensions.

Our officers remain committed to both proactively and reactively addressing impaired driving through proactive patrols and dedicated enforcement efforts, including but not limited to the Festive RIDE Campaign. We also rely on the support of community members who call 9-1-1 to report suspected impaired drivers. This partnership between law enforcement and our community members is essential, and it has undoubtedly helped prevent countless incidents.

We would like to extend our appreciation to all the community members who make the responsible choice to drive safe and sober. It may seem like a simple act, but it is an act that saves lives.
