So far in the month of November, we’ve arrested 20 impaired drivers (during both regular traffic patrol and RIDE checks). That number is completely unacceptable.
Driving impaired is a criminal choice - and it can have tragic consequences on your life, your loved ones and your fellow community members.
GSPS Traffic Management have begun RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) spot checks for the holiday season. Within the month of November, three RIDE checks have been conducted and approximately 1,200 vehicles have been stopped to check drivers for sobriety.
The following enforcement actions have been taken during these RIDE spot checks:
- 6 - Impaired drivers arrested and charged with Impaired driving/Blood Alcohol Concentration 80+
- 3 - Three-day suspensions for registering in the warn range for alcohol
- 1 - Novice driver charged with alcohol offences under the Highway Traffic Act
- 6 - Highway Traffic Act Charges including one suspended driver
We remind the community that there is ALWAYS an alternative to driving impaired. We urge you to call a cab, use a ride-sharing service, call a friend or family member, plan ahead for a designated driver, use public transit, stay the night or call Safe Ride Home Sudbury at 705-675-2255.
Many impaired drivers are located and arrested with your assistance by calling 911 to report an impaired driver on the roadway. We encourage community members to call 911 when you see an impaired driver and to provide as much information as possible regarding the make, model and licence plate of the vehicle, as well as, the direction of travel. We thank you for your help in keeping our roads safe.
Expect to see us anywhere, anytime.
