On Friday, May 3, 2024, the Ontario Women in Law Enforcement (OWLE) hosted its annual Awards Gala in Brampton honouring female police service members from across the province in Major Award Categories and through Length of Service Awards.
A number of GSPS members received Length of Service Awards for having served 25- and 30-years in the policing profession.
Members of the Sweeney Homicide Investigative Team; Retired Staff Sergeant Sandy Dicaire, Retired Detective Sergeant Sharon O’Brien, Dana Daoust, Amanda May and Emily Heffern were the recipients of the Teamwork Award. The Sweeney Homicide Investigation spanned over 21 years where over 1,800 persons of interest were eliminated through investigative techniques including DNA comparison. In December 2018, the individuals responsible for the attack was arrested for the murder of Renee Sweeny and in 2023, he was convicted of Second-Degree Murder.
Robin Wemigwans was the recipient of the Indigenous Leadership Award for championing the rights and visibility of Indigenous peoples through internal initiatives and reframing policing working groups. Robin spearheaded the creation and introduction of the GSPS ceremonial Number One Dress Ribbon Skirt, continuously provides our members with teachings during Indigenous Peoples History Month and has been integral to enhancing officer training focused on cultural sensitivity and trauma-informed response.
