In the summer of 2015, the Greater Sudbury Police Service was inundated with over 1700 calls for service regarding the presence of Black Bears within our community.
In order to create efficiencies within our Communications Centre we have created a new Bear Information Line to assist the general public when dealing with Black Bears.
Starting the 20th of May 2016, when a call for service comes into the Communication Centre regarding a black bear, the call will be screened by our Communication Centre Personnel.
Calls that do not meet the threshold for a police response will be forwarded to the GSPS Bear Information Line.
This information line will provide our community with alternative strategies on how deal with black bears.
The Greater Sudbury Police Service is committed to working in collaboration with our community partners regarding this issue. We would to thank the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and the City of Greater Sudbury for their continued dedication in helping us determine the appropriate strategies for dealing with bears.
For members of the public who wish to call the Bear Line Directly, they may do so by calling:
