As we continue to celebrate National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, we thank our 911 Dispatchers and Communicators who dedicate their lives to serving the public and ensuring our community members’ safety. They are the calm voices in a storm; they are the unsung heroes!

Meet Megan Band, Communicator, 911 Emergency Communications Centre: Communicator sitting at desk smiling

Q: What inspired you to become a Communicator with GSPS?

A: For me, there’s nothing more exciting than the high-stress, fast-paced environment we work in. Choosing a career in something I love has always been a priority for me, and I’m so lucky I’ve found that in being a Communicator.

Q: What’s the best part about your job? Why do you love doing what you do?

A: The best part about my job are the people I get to work with. Not only do I work with a group of incredible Police Officers and Civilians, but my fellow Communicators never cease to amaze me. I may be biased but I think we make an amazing team, and that feeling is overwhelming after a really long and crazy day.

A lot of people don’t realize that Communicators exist in the background. I love being involved in the work that our Police Officers do. Every day is different and it never fails that I learn something new every shift. It’s one of the most challenging jobs I’ve ever done, but definitely the most rewarding. I wouldn’t change a thing.

Q: What advice would you give to a girl or woman aspiring to join the policing profession/law enforcement field?

A: Just do it. A lot of strong, powerful women have fought for their place in law enforcement and paved the way for us to continue carrying that torch. I work with so many incredible female Police Officers who have been doing it as long as I’ve been alive, and starting in law enforcement 30 years ago is not the same as it is today. Do it for them, and for the future of women in policing too!
