Around 6:15 a.m. this morning, August 16, 2024, officers were dispatched to Main Street in Lively in relation to a theft of motor vehicle. Information provided was that the driver of a pick-up truck had attended an establishment on Main Street and while inside the establishment an unknown individual entered the vehicle and drove off. The vehicle was last seen being driven on MR55 towards Copper Cliff.
While officers were on route, our 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Centre received multiple traffic complaints regarding the vehicle as it was being driven in an aggressive and dangerous manner, at a high speed while swerving across the road.
Officers located the vehicle on Lorne Street and activated the emergency lights on the marked police cruiser to conduct a traffic stop, however, the driver did not stop the vehicle, running a red light at Ontario Street. Out of a concern for public safety, the officers did not pursue the vehicle.
A short time later, the vehicle was located abandoned on Elm Street after it struck a barrier. Information provided was that the driver had fled on foot towards the bus depot. Based on the description of the individual, officers located the person believed to be responsible on Medina Lane and took the person into custody.
Based on the interaction with and behaviour of the driver, officers believed that he was impaired. Once at police headquarters, a Drug Recognition Expert attended to conduct an evaluation, however the individual refused.
The 29-year-old man has been charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code of Canada;
- Theft of Motor Vehicle

He will attend Bail Court today to answer to the charges. His name cannot be released at this time as the information has not yet been sworn to through the court process.
