Over the Labour Day long weekend, officers arrested and charged nine drivers for impaired-related offences and laid numerous charges under both the Highway Traffic Act and the Criminal Code of Canada.
Five of the nine drivers arrested for Impaired Operation were charged as the result of traffic stops by officers on patrol. The drivers, ranging from 19 to 50 years of age were charged with different offences relevant to the incident/individual including Drive Motor Vehicle with Open Container of Liquor, Fail to Comply with Release Order, Breach of Probation Order, Obstruct Peace Officer and Driving While Under Suspension.
The remaining four incidents were as follows;
Incident 1
On August 30, 2024, an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with a stolen licence plate. When asked for a driver’s licence, ownership and insurance, the driver was unable to provide ownership of or insurance on the vehicle. Upon running the driver through a police database, the officer discovered that the driver was a Prohibited Driver for Driving While Under Suspension and was subject to two Probation Orders to not operate a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration above zero.
The officer administered a mandatory alcohol screening device and the driver provided a breath sample over zero mg of alcohol in 100mL of blood.
The 53-year-old driver was charged with Fail to Comply with Probation Order x2, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000, Fail to Surrender Permit for Motor Vehicle, Driving While Under Suspension, Use Plate Not Authorized for Vehicle and Operate a Vehicle Without Insurance.
Incident 2
On August 31, 2024, our 9-1-1 Emergency Communication Centre received multiple calls related to a vehicle being driven in an erratic manner on Elm Street. The vehicle was seen being driven into oncoming traffic and swerving across the lanes. While officers were being dispatched, the vehicle was involved in a single vehicle collision. Information provided was that the vehicle struck a rock cut and that the driver of the vehicle was outside of the vehicle acting erratically.
Officers arrived on scene and located the driver. While speaking with the driver, officers noticed signs of impairment. The driver was placed under arrest; however, the driver was transported to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the collision. Blood samples were collected at the hospital as officers were advised by medical staff that the driver could not complete the physical portion of the Drug Recognition Evaluation.
The 26-year-old was charged with Operation While Impaired, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Fail to Comply with Probation Order x3 and Fail to Properly Wear Seatbelt.
Incident 3
On September 1, 2024, an officer was conducting traffic control at the intersection of Lloyd Street at Brady Street when a vehicle attempted to enter the closed intersection. The officer provided verbal directions to the driver, however the driver proceeded into the intersection coming close the officer. The officer once again provided verbal directions. This time the driver put the vehicle into reverse and accelerated at a high rate of speed back onto Lloyd Street almost striking a median.
A second officer nearby who saw the interaction, conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. Based on the interaction with the driver, the officers conducted a Standard Field Sobriety Test and determined the driver performed poorly. The driver was arrested and transported to police headquarters where an evaluation was conducted by a Drug Recognition Expert, confirming the driver was impaired by drugs.
The 36-year-old driver was charged with Operations While Impaired.
Incident 4
On September 1, 2024, police were contacted regarding a single vehicle collision on Black Lake Road in Lively. Information provided was that there was a vehicle in the ditch in front of a residence and the individual believed to be the driver was acting in an erratic manner. While police were being dispatched a second vehicle attended the area to pick up the driver. A description of the vehicle was provided to police to locate and identify the driver.
Responding officers located the second vehicle on Municipal Road 55 where officers conducted a traffic stop. Once the vehicle stopped, the individual believed to be the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision exited the vehicle and approached the police cruiser. Upon speaking with the individual, officers detected signs of impairment. The individual was placed under arrest and was transported to police headquarters where a Drug Recognition Expert completed an evaluation confirming that the individual was impaired by drugs.
The 52-year-old was charged with Operation While Impaired.
The individuals were released on undertakings or first appearance notices with future court dates. Their names cannot be released at this time as the information has not yet been sworn to through the court process.
We would like to recognize and commend the officers on-duty over the weekend for their proactive and reactive efforts locating, identifying and arresting these individuals who posed an elevated threat to the safety of our community.
