Police have a critical role in strategic enforcement efforts that target the trafficking of illicit substances, disrupt organized crime, and remove dangerous drugs from our streets. The Greater Sudbury Police Service remains committed to holding offenders accountable by focusing resources on those who pose an elevated risk to the safety, security and wellness of Greater Sudbury.

As part of our Community Safety and Well-being Plan, members of the Integrated Crime Section and Community Response Unit conducted targeted enforcement in the downtown core from February 24 to March 7, 2025, in relation to individuals believed to be trafficking illicit drugs, bail compliance and those wanted on outstanding arrest warrants.

As a result of this targeted initiative, officers executed 57 arrest warrants, arresting 61 individuals on new and outstanding charges, laid 52 Crime Code of Canada and Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) charges and seized $76,800 worth of illicit drugs. Officer seized 301 grams of cocaine, 268 grams of Fentanyl and 210 grams of methamphetamine, as well as, $9,051 in cash.

The Integrated Crime Section aims to identify and disrupt organized crime in Greater Sudbury through innovative technology, collaborative partnerships and traditional Police work resulting in the arrest of those involved, holding them accountable for their criminal activities and the seizure of illegal drugs, prohibited firearms and proceeds of crime. We are dedicated to prevention and risk intervention through the Bail Compliance and Warrant Apprehension Program, with a strong focus on violent and high-risk offenders. The Bail Compliance and Warrant Apprehension Program is funded by the Government of Ontario.

Illicit drugs, particularly opioids, have devastating impacts on community safety and well-being, contributing to overdose deaths, increased crime, and strained social and healthcare systems. The opioid crisis affects individuals, families and communities, leading to increases in addiction, homelessness, and mental health challenges that put immense pressure on loved ones, first responders and support services. Addressing this crisis requires a multi-faceted approach that includes public awareness, education, and strong community partnerships. Harm reduction strategies play a crucial role in saving lives and connecting individuals with the help they need. Through collaboration with healthcare providers, social services, and community organizations, police work to balance enforcement with compassionate, evidence-based solutions that prioritize both public safety and individual well-being.
