Around 10:55 a.m. on April 1, 2025, Greater Sudbury Fire Services were dispatched to a structure fire on Hanna Avenue in Capreol. Fire Services arrived on scene to extinguish the fire and an individual became aggressive with firefighters. The individual then barricaded himself inside the residence prior to police arrival.
Members of Patrol Operations set-up containment of the residence while Emergency Response Unit officers arrived on scene.
ERU officers approached the residence to speak with the individual, however he was not cooperative. The individual discharged a firearm at the officers. As a result, residents in proximity to the residence were asked to shelter in place.
Vehicle and pedestrian traffic were restricted in the area due to the presence of firearms and public safety concerns.
Around 5:00 a.m. on April 2, 2025, officers from the ERU made entry into the residence and located the individual.
Just before 6:50 a.m., after close to two hours of negotiations inside the residence, the individual was taken into custody.
The 36-year-old, man is being charged with numerous firearm-related offences and unlawfully in a dwelling.
He will attend Bail Court today to answer to the charges.
Detectives from the Major Crime Section of our Criminal Investigation Division have been granted a Search Warrant for the residence. Detectives will remain on scene to execute the search warrant.
The shelter in place for residents in proximity has been lifted.
All area roads are now open.
