Around 7:45 p.m. on May 4, 2023, police were dispatched to a weapons complaint at Lisgar Street at Elm Street. Information provided was that individuals were involved in an altercation. During the altercation, a man pointed a firearm at another man, however the man pushed the gun away and the gun discharged leading to a woman involved in the initial altercation being shot.
The 41-year-old woman was transported to hospital by City of Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services with serious injuries.
At 7:50 p.m. officers located the man believed to be responsible for the shooting walking on Brady Street at Minto Street.
The man was taken into custody without incident. Upon searching the man, officers located a gun, a taser and illicit drugs believed to be crystal methamphetamine and fentanyl.
The 38-year-old man has been charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code of Canada and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA):
- Aggravated assault
- Possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order x8
- Unauthorized possession of a weapon
- Careless use of a firearm
- Ponting a firearm
- Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking
- Possession of a schedule I substance
- Failure to comply with release order x2
- Failure to comply with probation order
His name cannot be release as the information has not yet been sworn to through the court process. He will appear in court in the near future as he required medical attention for an unrelated health issue. An update will be provided when a court date has been determined.
This is a targeted and isolated incident as the individuals involved are known to each other.
