Shortly after 4:15 p.m. on March 29, 2024, officers were dispatched to a residential unit on Bruce Avenue in relation to a Weapons complaint. Information provided was that Greater Sudbury Paramedics had attended the unit for an individual who had suffered a medical emergency. Upon entering the unit, Paramedics located the individual and while they were providing medical assistance, they located a firearm on the person. Paramedics exited the unit and contacted police.
When officers arrived on scene, they contacted the individuals inside the unit who exited the residence. Officers made entry into the residential unit and located the individual who required medical attention. The officers also located the loaded gun.
The individual was cleared by Paramedics and placed under arrest.
27-year-old Malik Francis from Southern Ontario was charged with the following under the Criminal Code of Canada;
- Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
- Carrying a Concealed Weapon
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
- Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
- Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
- Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition
While inside the residential unit, Detectives located a substantial quantity of illicit drugs in plain sight. The individual was additionally charged with Possession of Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking. It was also determined that the individual was wanted on an outstanding Bench Warrant in Southern Ontario as he had failed to appear in court in relation to a Mischief Under $5,000 incident.
He was held in custody overnight and attended Weekend and Statutory Holiday (WASH) court on March 30, 2024, to answer to the charges.
Detectives from the Major Crime Section of our Criminal Investigation Division applied for and were granted a search warrant for the residential unit.
On March 30, 2024, Detectives from the Integrated Crime Section of our Criminal Investigation Division executed the search warrant and located close to 122 grams of what is believed to be Fentanyl worth approximately $36,570 and over 74 grams of what is believed to be Cocaine worth approximately $7,420, as well as, close to $4,000 in cash.
As the result of the search warrant, a 51-year-old woman from Greater Sudbury was placed under arrest and charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code of Canada and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA):
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
- Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking x2
She was released on an Undertaking with a court date of May 1, 2024, to answer to the charges. Her name cannot be released at this time as the information has not yet been sworn to through the court process.
