UPDATE
At approximately 11:30 a.m. this morning, August 25th, 2023, members of our Criminal Investigations Division, Emergency Response Unit and Uniform Patrol located the man believed to be responsible for the violent incident that occurred on August 22nd, 2023.
Throughout the course of this investigation, the Greater Sudbury Police Service has reasonable grounds to believe that this incident was hate-motivated.
The man was arrested in the area of Brady St at Paris St in Greater Sudbury without incident and remains in custody.
This man has been charged with Attempt to Commit Murder under the Criminal Code of Canada. His name cannot be released as the information has not yet been sworn to through the court process.
He will attend W.A.S.H. court tomorrow, August 26th, 2023 to answer to the charge.
The matter has now been assigned to Detectives in the Major Crime Section of our Criminal Investigations Division who are specifically trained as Hate Crime and Hate-bias/Hate-motivated Investigators.
The Greater Sudbury Police Services recognizes that Hate Crimes and Hate-bias incidents are extremely underreported and we are working diligently to change that. We take reports of Hate-motivated crime and Hate-bias incidents very seriously and we recognize the impact and pain that ripples throughout the community when these incidents occur. We want to assure you that we are committed to investigating these situations thoroughly.
Although Hate-motivated/bias incidents are underreported, we continue to work with our internal members, community members and community partners to build public trust through transparency and community engagement through education and awareness.
The Greater Sudbury Police Service continues to appeal to the victim of this Attempt Murder and to any witnesses who were in the area at the time of the incident to please come forward. We are asking individuals who were in the area of Paris Street between Cedar Street and Larch Street on Tuesday, August 22nd, 2023 between 2:45 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. that may have witnessed this incident or who may have dash camera footage of the incident to come forward by calling Detective Sergeant Robert Weston at 705-675-9171 extension 2341.
Due to the evidence collected in this investigation so far, Police are concerned that there may be additional incidents involving this man that have not yet been reported. The man is described as Caucasian, appears to be between the ages of 50-65 years old, approximately 5'6" to 5'8" in height, approximately 160 lbs, with a long grey and white beard with brown hair; wearing a Blue Jays baseball cap, with an all blue t-shirt and dark shorts. Police ask anyone who may have experienced an assault at the hands of this man to come forward by calling GSPS at 705-675-9171 or Crime Stoppers at 705-222-8477.

Just after 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 22nd, 2023, the Greater Sudbury Police Service received a call in relation to a serious assault that had just taken place on the Eastbound sidewalk of Paris Street between Cedar Street and Larch Street in Greater Sudbury.
The caller advised that around 2:50 p.m., they were driving their truck northbound on Paris Street when they witnessed a man get forcefully grabbed by another man and thrown in front of the caller’s oncoming vehicle. Fortunately, the caller was able to apply their brakes just in time to stop before nearly hitting the man who had been thrown into the roadway.
Police are appealing to the victim of this offence and to any witnesses who were in the area at the time of the incident to please come forward.
