In 2017, the Greater Sudbury Police Service formed a sexual assault review committee in collaboration with community partner agencies. As a result, advocates from GSPS, Health Sciences North Violence Intervention Prevention Program (VIPP), Voices for Women, Centre Victoria Pour Femmes, YWCA Genevra House, Laurentian University and Sudbury and Area Victim Services meet on a monthly basis to review cases of sexual assault within the City of Greater Sudbury.
The sexual assault review committee reviews adult sexual assault cases from the year prior where charges have not been laid. The committee members provide feedback and recommendations as part of collective efforts to end violence against women. These recommendations strengthen police awareness while highlighting areas for improvement.
The internal sexual assault review committee consistently provides this feedback to our officers as well as ongoing training which is funded by our POC Project Champion Grant. The Greater Sudbury Police Service is committed to providing the best possible victim/survivor-centred response to crimes of sexual violence by working collaboratively with community and justice partners to develop and employ investigative best practices and trauma informed investigations.
As Sexual Assault Awareness Month nears its end, we want to thank our community partners for their ongoing commitment to survivors of sexual violence and overall best practices within the community.
