Even though Black Friday and Cyber Monday are associated to American Thanksgiving, many of us take advantage of the in-store and online deals. The average Canadian spends $291, the second highest amount globally after the United States.
Online shopping means packages being delivered to residences at any given time during the day/evening.
As we move into the festive holiday season, please keep in mind that “porch pirates” see unattended packages as a crime of opportunity and unfortunately take advantage of the fact that your deliveries are left outside.
If you ordered an item and realize that it was delivered but is missing, contact the delivery agency and then contact the seller of the item. Most stores and businesses can replace the lost/stolen item(s) through insurance. You are also encouraged to report the theft to police by submitting an online report through our Theft reporting option.
Crime prevention is a shared commitment and there are precautions you can take to reduce the chances of having your package(s) stolen.
- Always track your package so you know when it is out for delivery/has been delivered
- If you have the option, have your package delivered to your work
- Have your package delivered to the home of a relative or friend that you know will be home
- Have your package held at your local post office for pickup
- If possible, take advantage of the “ship to store” option that many stores offer
- Request that your package has signature confirmation upon delivery
- Ask your carrier to place the package in an area out of plain view
- Install video surveillance equipment including but not limited to a doorbell camera
